MARKET FOR PIGS.
A Feilding farmer,, in conversation with an Advocate representative, states that he and. his neighbours are far from being pleased with the prices offering at the commencement of this [ season for pigs, viz., Id per lb. There are several in his community also who I will absolutely decline to do business at this price. They contend that 5d | would be little enough, -when taking into consideration the keeping of pigs through the winter and the increased price of food and labour. Further the deduction of 27.J per cent on live pigs is too grasping on the part of the buyers, and practically means that the -farmer has to sacrifice about 501b on a good fat pig. The same farmer also .reviews last year's l operations, where buyers, when afraid of an outside firm, bumped up the price to 6d per lb, but when the danger of competition had passed, and it .was getting late in the season, again reduced the price to M at the very time when the weather w.ns cold and it eos-t more to get a pig fit for market. A strong ring of farmers have decided to take a firm stand in the matter, and the result of their enterprise will, no doubt, be watched with interest by others. They recognise the Fact that they are the masters and ,nnt the, buyers, and having another channel open to dispose of their bacon they are going to stand tip for v "> what is oulv fair and reasonable. |
