BOXING
MEHEGAn' DEFEATS WELLS. (Received. Sepicmbe/ 17, noon.) LONDON.. September 16. . "Hughio" Mehegan, light-weight' champion boxer of Australia; beat "Matt" Weils, England's premier light-weight, in the fourteenth round or: n foul. The fight was a desperate one, marked througiiout by almost continual' chinching. Wells had the best of tho first eight rounds, but Mehegan]s hard, fierce body punches had their effect. From tfie ninth round Meliegan went rapidly ahead. Wells was badly cut about the face and bled profusely. Although he made a great rally in tho thirteenth round he could nofi keen it up. Mehegan recovered well, and was dable to take punishment. 'Wells was V/ery weak. In the fourteenth round he was disqualified for striking Mehegan, twice after the gong had sounded. He showed little real boxing, and the opinion is that Mehegan would have won apart from the disqualification.
