THE EGMONT ELECTION.
JTJie Egmont electorate, which in December la.st turned down the sitting member in. favour of a Minister of the Crown, has recanted and returned to its first love. And thus have Taranaki and the Masscy Government |an exceedingly popular opponent in Mr Wilkinson by a majority of 577 over an exceeding popular opponent in Mr | Astbiiry, is an indication that the electors have implicit confidence in the ability of the -Mawsey Government to j safeguard the interests'of the Dominion, and to carry through its pro- ! gressive policy. It would have been strange, indeed, had a country constituency selected the representative of. a decadent party, a party without ; a leader, and composed of irreconcilable elements. However, tlii?, has 1 not happened. Mr Massey is .strengthened in the House and in the country, and the future of the Reform 'Party is assured.
