THE DEFENCE SYSTEM.
The debate in the House of Representatives last week on the defence system afforded an opportunity to Messrs Payne, Isitt and Hindniarsh to show their lack of appreciation of the requirement);.! of the country in the mutter of defence. The.se gontlemeu have consistently opposed, tlie compulsory clauses of the Act, kuow■ng that upon these clauses entirely depends th.e success or failure of th» scheme. When Mr Isitt asky that •'consoientiou.-i objt tors" be absolved from service, lie knows that lie is asking tlie impossible. There are men who conscientiously object to paying taxes, and to performing other obligations to the State. Are we going to relieve them of their responsibilities because of their consciences ? The proposition is absurd, and none knows it better than Mr Isitt. Tt is gratifying to observe that a large majority of the representatives of the peopl are not going to allow themselves to be influenced by the threats of ■ r noisy and irresponsible minority.
