TRUST LANDS TRUST
QOESTJON OF SCHOLARSHIPS. At last night's meeting of the Mnstorton Trust Lands Trust, the report of the committee appointed to allocate scholarship grants was presented. Mr Michell objected to the allocation of a C4O scholarship to Meredith Ewart, becauso 110 had passed his matriculation in 1910, while the present allocations dealt with 11)12. He considered that Reginald Wilton' and ['"red Matthows had prior claims. Mr Krahagen asked how it was that - Ewart had qualified in 1910 and was only taking up the scholarship now. Mr W. H. Jackson explained that during the interval Ewart had bo°n studying under private tuition in the town, and working at the same time. He also explained that according to the regulations the £4O scholarship was awarded to a student oirthe condition that>the-Whole of his time wr.s spent in the University. Mr O. N. Pragnell that the two boys mentioned by Mr Michell were not eligible according to the re-' gulations. Mr D. Caselberg .said that he understood the whole question of granting or withholding scholarships was entirely at the*disposal of. the Trustees. *He therefore thought that no grant of £4O should be made this year, as the finances wore not in a condition, to warrant it.
Mr Prague!! said that a?; there was a. sun? of £llO ayailablo for scholarsbiij; -h»- did not.,think,.;,..tlie question of 'finance need be'a drawback. Mr Jackson again point-eel out that the grant was made last year under a misapprehension, but now that- Ewart was just commencing his University course the matter was altered, and he thovfght the grant should 1)0 passed. Mr T.,J>nsrg said that if thoro was no one eitgiblo for the scholarship according to the regulations, ther&' : should be no grant made this year. Mr H. C. Robinson stated that as in his opinion the policy of the Trust in allocating scholarships was wrong, he would not take part in the present discussion, as until the policy is altered, the allocations have to be mndo. He suggested that any system of scholarships should be arranged by an "outside educational expert, and that Sir Robert Stout might bo fsked to assist in the matter when the time is ripe.
Mr Michell moved that the £4O front he -"ir-!< out for the present year, and £lO inserted in its place. Mr D. Caselberg seconded the motion. winch was carried.
