LADIES HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
WAIRARAPA AGAIN SUCCESSFUL. OHRISTCHUR€H, Last Night. The New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Tournament was continued to-day in fine, weather, and in the presence of a large gathering of spectators. The following are the remits of the day's play:— Section A.—Manawatu 4 v. Taranaki 0;- Poverty Bay 2 v. Canterbury B 0; Wairarapa 4 v. Otago 0; Nelson a bye. Section B. —Wanganui 4 v. Wellington 0; Hawke's Bay 3v. Buller 1; Auckland 7 v. West Coast 0; Canterbury A a bye. The game between Wairarapa and Otago wa,s very interesting in the first spell, when Otago was doing quite its share of work, and was making Wairarapa defend often and; fight for each yard that it gained. Towards the end of the spell Otago seemed to have the advantage, though .it was clear that the better combination of Wairarapa. and the hard, fast play of their wings would tell before. the end. The second spell was warm at the beginning, and Wairarapa scored two goals in quick succession. Otago then, slackened visibly, being apparently unable to answer the persistent attack of their opponents. The (second spell was all in favour of Wairarana. . Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay still hold their position at the head ol tbfir resnopfjre .sections, and evervthings points to those two teams fighting it- otti for the championship.
