MASTERTON TELEPHONES

PROPOSED AUTOMATIC SYSTEM

In the report of the Chief Electrician of the Post and Telegraph Department, presented to the House of Representatives, yesterday, the following appears:—"lt was recently recommended tlint common battery outfits be obtained for Hamilton. Masterton,- Blenheim, and Oaniaru.. After fuller consideration the Chief Telegraph Engineer recommends that this be withdrawn in order that the position may be further studied, with the object of finally determining whether automatic switchboards should' not be obtained instead. 'Recommended that tenders for automatic switchboards for these places be also called for. The cost will probably be €3OOll for each place, as against £2OOO. The annual charges for day work will be about t same, as the automatic will enable r twenty-four hour day senvice to be given, the ultimate expense of providing for night attendance—say £2-o0 to £3OO per annum—will be avoided."
