JUSTICES OF THE PEACE.
i There is a good deal to recommend the suggestion mado in the House of Re--1 presentatives last night that members of Parliament and Chairmen of County Councils should, ex officio, be Justices of tho Peace. If the Mayor of a town (however small) is a Justice hy virtue of his office, surely memberg of Parliament and Chairmen of County Councils are entitled to a similar distinction. We would go further and say that Justices should he selected as far as possible from those who have rendered service to the country on local bodies. Thi* •would he an incentive to citizens tobear their burden of tho responsibility of local v The political appointments of the past bare brought thft Commission of the Pe-aef 1 into utter disrepute.
