THE GOVERNOR'S VISIT.

lb is most regrettable that* an attempt should be made at this stage i to create ill-feeling' over the visit to Ma&terton of His Excellency the Governor. The position is one that should not require explanation. A meeting of members ot the Overseas Club was I publicly called. At that meeting it was decided that His Excellency be entertained -st a luncheon prior to the official opening of the Club. An this is the last occasion upon which Lord Islington will visit Mastertoi;, it was decided that representatives of local j bodies and leading public men be invited to sttend the luncheon. His Worship the Mayor, amongst others, will be invited to be present, and we have no doubt that, to maintain the dignity of his position and that of th? town, he will readily respond. As the visit is not a civic one, it would hove been absurd and out of place to have asked the Mayor or the Borough Council to take the initiative In the .reception or entertainment of the Governor. ' The authorised organiser of the Overseas Club is Mr J. A. Capper. He has secured over two hundred members for the Club. A circular, drafted, so we are .Informed, by Mr H. C. Robinson, has been 'sent to local bodies and others by the organiser, acting on- behalf of. members of the Club. There has been no officiousness and: no muddling. It is therefore to be deeply regretted that a Vice-Regal visit, arranged under proper conditions at a duly-conven-ed meeting, should be made the occasion for spiteful imvecFive. It is a. shameful thing that such words as "unauthorised muddlers" should be applied to men who are acting in a thoroughly bona fide and proper manner. What would havejbeen thought had such epithets been cast at the Mastertcn Competitions Society or the A. and P. Association, when they invited Hi? Excellency the Governor to the tnv/n without consulting the Ciiicf Magistrate? ■
