A Parliamentary paper on the cable reductions to Australasia states that during the first quarter 46,450 words were sent at the deferred rate, while the number sent at the normal rate showed an increase. ' The volume of Press business was not affected, but about half that sent was "deferred."
The. profit on the operations via Pacific for the year was £37,045. The deficit, including all liabilities, is set down at £40,498.' The report emphasises the necessity of future Australian-Canadian mail' contracts providing for a call at Fanning Islnd.
