BRITAIN'S DEMAND
WHAT MR TAFT'S FRIENDS SAY

President Tutt, it is expected, will postpone decision regarding the British demand for arbitration in regard to tho Panama .Canal question until Mr Knox (Secretary for State) returns from Japan. Mr 'Jaft's friends admit that an extremely delicate situation. "U'i 11 arise, if lie raSuses to agree to arbitration. On the other hand it is painted out that the United States cm hardly bo expected -.to submit the case to The Hague, .where all the nations' interests are .apposed to tho ye of America.
Mr Taft has caused it to be understood that he signed tfche Canal Bill reluctantly, hoping the work of creating necessary legislative machinery could proceed, while 1 earing Congress to revise that part of the Bill on which Britain presses her demand. Mr Taft, it ig understood, will propose that an arbitration court composed of British and Americans be set up.
