BIG CONFLAGRATION
HALF A MILLION DAMAGE
MANY EXCITING SCENES.
(Received La at rvight 10.30 o'clock.) NEW YORK September 4. A huge conflagration broke out n.t Los Angeles.. The fire started in a defective flue in a cafe on ,a ple.as.ure pier, and destroyed the chief buildings in Ocean Park and Venice. The loss is estimated at half a million sterling. Seven men were caught in the flamee at the end of tho pier , and leaped into the surf. Six were rescued. Tho seventh was drowned.
Thrilling, rescues were m3.de at the Hctel Decatur, where many occupants were, cut off by the flames.
The firomen saved nine bahies who were housed within a baby incubator on the Pier.
The Roman Catholics gathered at St. Element's Church, and offered* prayers.
Tho wind shifted shortly afterwards and tho church remained untouched, although the surrounding buildings were destroyed.
