Mr John Payne, M.P.. ly.z Masterton for Wellington yesterday. Mr David McEarlane has been reelected president of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce. Miss Thelma Petersen, the Wnirarapa contralto, who ;.<? some day going to the Old Country, is at present in Dnnedin. Mr W. Singleton, Assistant Dairy Commissioner, who is at present on « trip to is expected back by the Makura, which is due at Auckland from Vancouver on September 24th. Mr J. Farrelly, who has severed his connection with the Eketahuna branch of the W.F.C.A., has been presented by the staff with a handsome travelling rug. Mr Lee, of the Kaiparoro cheese factory, has been appointed manager of the new Matahiwi (Masterton) factory.
At Wellington on Saturday Mr 0. Huckstop, of Putara, was married to Miss M. Christie, daughter of Mr D. Christie, of Wellington.
At a meeting, of the Masterton Drivers' Union last evening a motion of sympathy was passed with the widow, and family of the late Mr Jas. Pauling. Tho motion was carried in silence.
At last night's meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Tnw'the following motion was passed: "That this body of trustees desires to convey to its esteemed chairman (Mr R. Krahagen) their sincere sympathy with him in his recent sad bereavement."
Mrs Carter, one of the oldest residents of Pahatitanui, died yesterday morning. Her husband, Mr Edward Carter, pre-deceascd her by some years. , She was born in Scotland 71 years ago, and tame out to New Zealand when she uw a child.
On Sunday there passed away at Wanganui Mrs Jane Ormsbee. widow of the late Mr G. W r . Ormsbee and daughter of the late Mr Henry Nathan, one time Mayor of Wanganui. Mrs Ormsbee was seventy-eight years of age.
A quiet, wedding took place at Wellington on S.v.urdiiy, when.'Mr Kranci«i O. L.idhrook, second youngest son of Mr W. H. Ladbrook. of Warwick, England, was united to Miss Evelyn Frances A. Nicolsdn, daughter of Mr D. Nicolson, of Masterton. The newly-married couple will reside in Wellington.
Visitors at tho Club Hotel, Masterton, include Mr and Mrs Maunsell (Tinui) Mrs and Miss Elder. Messrs Badham, Smith, O'Brien, Griffiths, I.eatham, Garner, Little, Howden, Williamson, Lesvenr, Lord, StrangeMuir, Jones, Bell, Collier, Godwin (Wellington), Milliken (Palmerston North), Bird (Wanganui), Batten (Auckland). Mr W. Mason, of the Featherston factory, and the eldest son of Mr T. B. Mason, tho popular secretary of the Nireaha Cheese Company, has been appointed manager of the Rongomai cheese factory. Mr G. Waterson, of Nireaha, has been given charge of the factory at Potara. and Mr A. Debrency, of the Auckland district, will take charge at Waiwera.
The death took place at Parkville on Monday evening of Mr James Wallis, an old resident of tho district, at the age of 85. years. Deceased was one of the early Australasian pioneers, and was one of the survey party thatlaid out thei township of Adelaide. Some thirty years ago he came to New ■Zealand, and after living in Masterton for a number of years, he'-took up his residence in Eketahuna.
The Rev J. E. Ditchficld, M.A., whose illness was announced yesterday by telegram, js vicar of St. Jame.s-the-less. Bethnal Green, London. The Sydney Daily Telegraph says of him, "He is every inch a man. A man on right lines and burning with all a good, brave man's enthusiasm. His good' humour and sane optimism are hard to resist." It is to he hoped that bis illness will not interfere with his engagement at Masterton on September 16th.
A cable message received from Melbourne last night announced the death of Mr W. H. Judkins. the wellknoivn social reformer. Mr Judkins was engaged in temperance, work in New Zealand for a number of years. For a time he resided in Masterton, where lie conducted an auctioneering business. Subsequently ho went to Melbourne, where he engaged in social reform work and became Australian editor of the Review of Reviews. He had been suffering from the dreaded cancer for many months. ,
