A PARTING MESSAGE

CORDIAL RELATIONS

(Received Last Night, 10.20 o'clock.)

LONDON, August 30.

The Hon. R. L. Borden, in a statement to the Press, on the eve of sailing to-day, expressed his grateful appreciation of the welcome extended to the Canadian Ministers, and truststhat he will early revisit Britain. The Imperial Ministers, he states, received them in the most cordial manner, and the Empire Defence question was discussed with mutual frankness. The stress of the session prevented tho Canadians from receiving full and final information respecting the conditions of naval defence affecting the Empire. He expected to receive this i shortly after his return, when the 'Canadian Cabinet, would speedily consider it. He denied that Sir Wilfred Laurier declined to meet him in conference with certain British .Minister., for the very good reasons that he was not asked and that no visit of' British. Ministers to Canada was yet arranged.

SIR WILFRED LAURIER, ATTITUDE STRONGLY CRTTICIS-

(Received La-vb Night, 10.20 o'clock.) LONDON, August 30.

The Dally Mail ridicules Sir Wilfred Laurier's argument that Canada does not require .any stronger protection than arbitration*. The article adds.—"We have just seen how a Government may strive to frustrate even the limited feeble efforts, of the Arbitration Convention 'between 'the United States and Britain.''' ..-v.

The Morning Post shows that Sir Wilfred Laurier and the official Opposition are opposed both to.the cooperation and consultation which the Rt. Hon. H. H. Asquith recommends. "Indeed," the paper states, "Sir Wilfred Laurier's speech, cancnly be described as hostile- to the British naval policy."- Is it nothing to Canada, that the British fleet protects Canada's ports, commerce, argosies and grain ? , Must we be repaid besides ■by indifferent sneers? Sir Wilfred Laurier must be reminded that the league of partners for common defence is not surrender, but an insurance of autonomy.'
