SUGGESTED TERMS OF SETTLEMENT.
(By Telegraph—Press Association. )
REEFTON, Last Night,
Mr A. W. Evans, general superintendent of tho Consolidated, Progress and Blackwater Companies, wrote to the lnangahua Miners' Union on August 22nd, suggesting that a settlement bo arrived at under the Arbitration Act of 1898, and not under the industrial and Conciliation Act. The full text of the letter is published in this evening's local ..paper. Mr Evans suggests that all matters in dispute be referred to two arbitrators (one representing each party), and that an umpire be mutually decided on by arbitration, or, in the event of disagreement, by the President of the Arbitration Court; that all questions in dispute be settled uy the arbitrators, in case of failure the arbitrators to agree to the umpire's decision -as. final; both parties to pledge themselves to agree to the decision and re-start work ;'the cost of arbitration to be fixed by the arbitrators and paid for by each party as the arbitrators or umpire shall determine. The above was put forward as a suggestion. The Miners' Union secretary replied, stating that the matter had been discussed at a. meeting of the Union, and referred to the Federation of Labour Executive.
The secretary of the Miners' Union left for Wellington in regard to tho Tunnel Commission.
