EAST COAST RAILWAY.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —T read with interest Mr Coleman Phillips' article on the East Coast Railway. The Government years ago adopted the policy of State ownership of railways. Does Mr Phillips suggest that we should sell our existing railways, or does he mean tha't future lines should he built by private enterprise? Does ho want a repetition of the West Coast fiasco, where the lino was built from Wellington to Palmerston by private enterprise, and the Government was forced to' take over that line at something like a cool 1J- millions "As for private ownership preventing strikes, the Federation of Labour will embrace all workers, whether for the Government or private companies, so that argument will not hold good. It seems to me that Mr Phillips is an advocate for the capitalists, and that his interest is not on behalf of the small man on the land. I hope I am. misjudging him in this respect, and that he is thinking of the small farmer, and has no eve on the dividends.—l am, etc., ; * • FARMER.
