HARDWOOD TIMBERS.

A deputation of sawmillers told the Minister of Railways yesterday that they objected to the removal of the differential tariff on the railways) against, Australian hardwood timbers used by local bodies in bridge-build-ing, etc. The deputation failed to adduce any sound reason for its objection. The interests of the great body of taxpayers should be considered before those of a few complaining sawmillers, more particularly when it is shown that, the local timbers are not suitable for bridge-building. The Minister will, it is hoped, defer to the wishes of the local bodies in this matter.
