BRANCH RAILWAY LINES.
The Minister of Public Works stated in the House cf Representatives yesterday, in answer to a question, that Parliament may have to consider the •advisability of allowing branch railway lines to be constructed privately. Singularly enough, this is a policy tint is recommended by Mr Coleman, Phillips, in an articlo published in the Age to-day. The policy of borrowing, at the present high rates of interest cannot well he continued, and i if the needs of the country for railway service? are to be met. there would appear to ho no option but to alloAv the work to be carried out by j private enter prise. The sooner Par- | liament is afforded an opportunity of j making a definite pronouncement on the. subject, the better will it be for ■ the Dominion.
