THE POULTRY INDUSTRY
DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIES'. CQu TdM.ravh — Prest Association ) . WELLINGTON, Last Night. A deputation representing the poultry industry of New Zealand from as far north ag Auckland and as far south as Dunedin, waited on> the Prime Minister to-day, to urge the the encouragement of the poultry export trade. It was represented b" the deputation that there was a market for eggs in Honolulu nnd Vancouver ( and that it \v;is the duty of the Government to encourage the opening up of such markets. The Government--should make it compulsory that all preserved eggs should he branded and mid as such. More use should he made of the experimental farms in connection with the poultry industry. There was great need for the dissemination of knowledge .concerning poultry-raising. ■ Mr John Studholme (Canterbury) asked that the Government should make a persistent and constant endeavour to encourage the industry, because it could be made one of the greatest adjuncts of the small cr allotment farmer.
In reply, the Hon. W. F. Miu> sey said the Government would do everything it possibly could to assist the export trade. He would instruct the Department to make the necessary enquiries. He agreed that the* l were possibilities of the" trade with Vancouver, and the Government mi 'g»t g° to the length of assisting in ■a.trial shipment. So far as the stamping of eggs was concerned, it would be necessary to pass legislation before that could be done. The expenditure on poultry farms had been very great, in fact, it had rather staggered him. Before the Government could do any more it would be necessary to go very carefully into the matter.
