"' 'MR J. CHARTERS. A pleasant function was held on Saturday, evening "at the residence of Mr. T. Pinkney, when members of the Masteivfcon Drivers' Union and friends assembled to bid farewell and make a presentation to Mr J. Charters, who is leaving for Australia this week. The president of the 'Union (Mr E. Hooper) occupied the chair. Diirini', the evening Mr E. Flanagan, on'behalf of the Drivers' Union, presented Mr Charters with a hand-somely-engraved tobacco pouch.. Mr Flanagan expressed the regret of members, that owing to illness in his family' Mr Charters bad to seek a warmer climate, but hoped that the change would result beneficially to him in every respect.

Mr \V. Fly, of the firm- of Fly and Young, of which Mr Charters has boon, .an employee for the past six years, presented that gentleman with ft suitably engraved travelling bag. In making the presentation Mr Flv referred to the many excellent qualities of Mr Charters as an employee, feeling that his firm war, losing the .services of a thoroughly reliable man, and wished him every 'success in his new-sphere. On behalf of the railway staff, Mr J. O'Neil presented Mr Charters with a Gladstone bag as a small token of their appreciation of the.many services rendered them. Messrs E. Spademan and J. Blaeknte.v carriers, as a mark of their esteem, presented Mr Charters with a fountain pen. Mr A. Young, on behalf of Mr M. J. Gallagher, carrier, presented -Mr Cliarters with a hand-somely-mounted pipe, Mr Gailaahcr by letter expressing his' best wishes for the future of Mr Charters. A. toastj list was honoured and songs and recitations were rendered during the evening. Messrs H. Evans and F. Waterhouse presided at the piano. An enjoyable, evening was brought to a close by cheers for the guest, host, and hostess.
