An old settler of the Pongaroa rlis triet, Mr J. Wilson, died at Pukehinau, a few days ago, aged 90 years. Mr Ewart Saunders and family are leaving Alfredton in a few weeks' timo for Glen Oroua, Palmerston.
Mr George Benton, an old resident of the Alfredton district, has disposed of his property, and intends leaving for Nireaha shortly to take up dairying. Mr James H. Pauling, who is still in a very weak condition, was removed to the Mastertou Hospital vesterdav.
Dr P. R. Cook, of Mastertou, has been promoted to the rank of SurgeonMajor in tho N.Z. Territorial Forces. The Hon Thomas Mackenzie, the new High Commissioner, will leave for London by the Kaikoura to-day, accompanied by Mrs Mackenzie and Miss Mary Mackenzie.
Visitors at tho Club Hotel, Masterton, include Mr Maxwell (Napier), Mr Elgar (Featherston), Messrs Davil, Parker, Littlejolm, Maryatt, Smith, Atkinson. Thropp, Birkett, and Williamson (Wellington).
Mr Robert Cleave died at his residence, A venal, Invercargill, this week. He established a seed and nursery business in Invercargill many years ago, Mr Clease served as n if.e;ijber of the Invercargill Boroug'i Council for n long neriod, and wis also connected with other local bodies.
Mr R. Nicholls, who died at Hobart last week, at the age of 82, had been editor of the Mercury since. 1883. He was formerly editor of the Ballarat Star, was present at the Eureka riot, and subsequently drew up the petition for amnesty The best-known of his family is Mr Justice Nicholls, of the Tasmanian Bench.
The death occurred at Levin on Saturday of Mr Mads Posen. who was well known in the Wairarapa. Deceased followed gold mining in the Wairarapa. in tho early days, and later was amongst the number to try their fortunes at Gabriel's Gully. Afterwards he came to the Wairarapa and lived at Dalefield for many years -—being one of the oldest settlers in that locality. The last three years he has resided at Levin. Deceased, who was 80 years of age, was the oldest member of the Carterton Foresters' Lodge.
