THE T [GHT-WEIGHT CHAMPION- ' SHIP. (By Teiegr-nh—Press Asznria.f ion.) PALMERSTON N., Last Night. In a 15-round contest for the-pro-fessional'. light-weight championship of New Zealand, Leu Porter, of Hastings, defeated Peter Cook, of Australia. on points. The contest went the full fifteen rounds at a merry pace all the way. Porter was the cleverer fighter, and did most of the leading, but Cook had an excellent defence. The verdict was most popular with an audience of over a thousand people. Watchorn, of Palmerston North, casilv beat Minifie, of Wellington, in the welter-weights, in a six-round contest. ' ■ , In the light-weights. J. Rersell, or Palmerston North, beat Twomey, of Wellington, in six rounds. Twomey was disqualified in the fifth round for holding. Mr Samson, of Wellington, was judge.
