CHIDLEY'S CASE

SYDNEY, August 20
The Hon James McGowen, Premier of Now South Wales, has received a report from two members of the Asylums Visiting Committee endorsing previous official opinions regarding Chidley. Mr McGowen has instructed the In-spector-General of Mental Hospitals to make a special report. Subscriptions for the Chidley Fund arc being largely granted.
DISCUSSION IN ASSEMBLY
LIBERTY OF THE SUBJECT
(Received this morning, 12.10 o'clock.) SYDNEY, August 20. In the Assembly in reply to a question the Hon. James McGowen stated that Chidley's friends had made no l-epresetitations to lViin. Mr Meagher moved an adjournment to discuss the case which, ho said, seriously affected the liberty cf the subject. The papers tabled in the House were incomplete and meaninglees. It was the duty of the Government to make them complete. Mr Levy considered that a mistake had been made, and the sooner it was rectified the better. Chidley's friendy should be given- a fair chance of defending him against a charge of insanitv.
