STATE COAL DEPOTS.
It is reassuring to learn from the Minister of Mines that the statement that the retail Stite coal depots are to be closed is without foundation. The Government is probably not in sympathy with the State entering into competition with private enterprise. Nevertheless, it cannot afford to abandon the State project until a fair trial has been given it on business lines. It is an open secret that the State coal-mines have been run at a loss. This may be due, however, to defective management. If the experience of the Government during the next year or two shows that the mines cannot be made to pay, it will be the duty of tho-Minister to close them down.
