THE "LIBERAL" CANDIDATE.
.„ -*__. The Fret's Association agent at Elthnm states that the ''Liberals" have selected Mr Astbury, a farmeir, to contest the Egmont seat. We do not pretend to know who the Eltham "Liberals" may be, or what is their objective in running a "Liberal" candidate against Mr Wilkinson, who has been selected by the Government to do battle for the Libenl policy. Presumably Mr Astbury has breii chosen by a meeting of Oppositionists. Why, then, should his supporters be ashamed to identify him ■vith the Opposition? It will be interesting to watch the progress of "ventfj in thi.-. election, because we may be able to discover from it what is the policy of the Opposition, and who is its leader. .Me :n while, Mr Astbury is deserving of sympathy, for he does not know whom ho is to follow, if elected. But there is so little doubt as to the results that the jackdaw "Liberals"" may as well reserve their energies.
