The Hon T. Mackenzie leaves Wellington for London on Friday next.
The death is reported from Wanganui of Mr A. A. Browne, for many years secretary to the Wanganui Education Board.
Mr G. R. Sykes,-M.P., will probably deliver his maiden speech in the House of Representatives to-morrow night. A Press telegram from Eltham states that Mr A. Astbury, a farmer of Mangatoki, will probably be selected as the Liberal candidate for the Egmont seat.
Mr M. Laracy, secretary of the Shearers' Association, will visit Mastertoh this week, in connection with business of the Association.
Another pioneer of Wellington, in the,person of Mrs Windmill, died..on Sunday at tho ripe old age of ninetytwo years.
Mrs Inder, wife of Mr S. Inder, postmaster of Masterton, has returned from a lengthy health-recruiting trip in the north. Her friends will be pleased to know that she is much improved in health. Grave doubts are entertained of the recovery of Mr G. Wheeler, buyer for the Longburn Freezing Company, who was badly injured in a trap accident on Friday last. Mr W. Arundel Orchard, a Sydney musician, at one time of Palmerston North, is a visitor to Wellington. Mr Orchard is to act as judge of the vocal and instrumental sections at the Auckland Competition Society's festival* Visitors at the Club Hotel. Masterton, include Mr Philip Newbury and Madame Spada (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs Summerhays, Messrs Boyd, Petitt, Thompson, Stock, Garner, Scott. Wigham, Rutherford, Chambers, and Forbell (Wellington).
At a meeting of the Board of Management of tho Wangamii Y.M.O.A. last night, Mr William Clark, at present secretary of the Perth Y.M.C.A.. was appointed secretary, on the iocommendation of Mr Jamieson, national secretary. Last week the death occurred at Hastings of Mr and Mrs Sam Hunter, who for very many years resided at The Portage, Kenepuru Sound, Marlborough. Mrs Hunter died of pneumonia on 1 Tuesday last, while Mr Hunter contracted a chill about that tune, and died on Saturday. On Thursday last the death occurred at Blenheim of Mr and Mrs William James Lodge. Mr Lodge, wh.o was 41 years of age, was taken ill earlier'in tho week ami on Thursday he succumbed to an attack of pneu,monia. Whilst nursing her husband Mrs Lodge fell ill of the same complaint, and passe<l awav on the same day. Two young children are left bereft.
Mr H. Billington. who has occupied the position of manager of the Ballance Dairy Company's creamery at Hukanui for the past twelve years, has received an appointment at the Dalefi'eld cheese factory. During his residence in Hukanui, Mr Billington took an active interest in school matters, and has been chairman of tho School Committee'. Tho residents of Hukanui will tender a complimentary social to Mr Billington. The death occurred at Wangamii last week of Mr Thomas Quinliv.in, senr.. father of Mr T. F. Quinlivan, of Hastings, private trainer to Mr E. J. Watt, at the age of VI years. Deceased was one of the oldest racing men in New Zealand, and was recognised as one of the most capable men who have been connected with the turf in this country. The late Mr Quinlivan took un the "Snort of Kings" as far back as 1860. and had a very successful career, winning, among other important events, the Wanganui Steeplechase in I%'~i, with Brigham Young, and the Derby in 1870 with Rocket. Deceased followed bis vocation up to a few weeks previous to his death, which resulted from internal trouble. He leaves a widow, two sons, and two daughters, for whom much sympathy will be felt.
