; AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

WHAT MR FISHER HOPES FOR

(Received August 19, 9.40 a.m.)

MELBOURNE, August 19, Mr Fisher, Federal Prime Minister, speaking at the Commercial Travellers' Association anniversary, said he hoped that New Zealand would come to closer relationship with Australia in. the matter of trade and defence than ever before. The Government cordially invited New Zaland representatives to discuss matters, so that New Zealand and Australia would be fraternally together, not merely as parts of the Empire, but associated for mutual protection and progress. (Cheers.) He hoped a conference would be held to discuss trade matters, the conference to include representatives of the Empire and the United States. By such means they could form a combination that would secure the peace of the world, despite :'.ny Power that might be desirous of disturbing it. (Cheers.)
