BANKING INSTITUTIONS.
gdfs - In the course of his address in Mastorton on Saturday night, the Hon. G. Fowlcis .stated that there are fewer banking institutions in New Zealand to-day than there were twenty-five years ago. Th\s is undoubtedly a fact, one of the banks having gone under in circumstances which are too well remembered. "Another institution was also in a very shaky condition until the. State came to (its assistance. The point for consideration at the present moment :,s whether there are too few banking institutions to transact tho business of the country, and whether a monopoly is in existence It is eminently desirable that the banks should have a sufficient reserve to protect the public in time of crisis; but it is not good for the community flint shareholders should bo reaping huge dividend* at •the expense of the traders. The Government should cause an investigation to be made into the working of the financial institutions of the Dominion.
