HOCKEY

HOLDERS VICTORIOUS. A hockey match which proved to be a very interesting contest was played on the Lansdowne grounds yesterday in fine weather, there being a moderate attendance of the public. The teams were : Challengers (riorowhenua)—Smart, McKenzie, Bulls. Seymour, Allen. Piper, Brewster, Bright, Kepu, Sevan, Griffiths. I Holders (Wairarapa)—Morgan, ' Dixon, W. Williams. Hanley, Scrimgeour, Ban-, Reid, Douglas, Fisher, Tunnicliffe, R. Williams. The opening of play was marked by hard hitting on both sides the ball being sent up and down field repeatedly. The Wairarapa backs were working hard and easily kept the ehalIlengers at bay. On the other hand the Horowhenua backs made a bad opening, the goalkeeper being especially weak. The first score was registered bv a well-known and consistent scorer in W. Fisher, captain, who also shot the second goal, both excellently timed hard shots. After tliis the Horowhenua men became more vigorous, and for some time had the home team defending._ Hanley, Dixon and Scrimgeour playing a particularly good defensive gamej r l!'ie next 'score was mainly the work of R. Williams, who centred, and Reid coming im placed a good goal. Douglas was " next, he scoring the last goal of the spell shortly before half time. At half time the homo men Ave re pressing and the score Avas: Wairarapa 4. HoroAvhenua 0. The second spell was a much more even set to, the visitors giving a good showing for some time. Their outstanding forwards wore Brewster and Kepu, who repeatedly got away. They Avere unfortunate in not scoring on several occasions. Bright, missed a possible chance, and the Horowhenua boys Avere then sent racim-: back to defend their goal. The final goal was scored about half way through this ■spell. Play .after this was mostly in favour of the home team, who lost se'veral chances through bad shooting. Tunnicliffe hit a well-judged one but was awarded off-side. The game ended : Wairarapa 5. HoroAvhenua 0. Taken on the whole the game was not a run-over for Wairarapa, who were often kept busy defending. The HoroAvhenua team was not their best representation and did much better than the scores indicate. Of the visiting forwards Bevan, Kepu and Brewster wpyo the pick, and Allen and McKenzie showed the best de--1 fence. As usual the home team played up to previous form, the forwards playing Avith excellent combination. Douglas', Fisher, and Reid Avere slightly more prominent than the rest. Of the backs Dixon and W. Williams, nt full, and Hanly and Barr. at halfback, showed up well. The latter player was inclined to be speculative. A feature of the same was the efficient and impartial refereeing by Messrs A. Pragnell and J. Gray.
