MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held in the Borough Chambers last evening, there being present His Worship the Mr.or (Mr J. M. Coradine) and Crs. H.'j. O'Leary, J. Elliott, F. W-Tomple,-E. Flanagan, W. Candy, W. Pragncll and A. Donald. a" deputation from the Mastertci ■Bcautifving Society, consisting of Messrs* Gillespie, Snell a.nd Alpass, waited on the council and asked th-.r,. the council grant a sum of money, -o=give any assistance in its power to the society in furthering the work of beautifying and improving various parl> of the Borough.

The Mayor explained that the council was not empowered to grant money for any object outside the council. He was sure that the council would .give all the support possible tn the beautifying scheme, but any money .granted would have to be expended by the council itself.

It was decided on the motion' of Cr. O'Leary that ,the council authorise the expenditure of a sum of £2O on places wilich may be decided upoi within the Borough.

An application for a license to drive a motor-car for hire within the Borough, was refused. j The Engineer's report was read and adopted, and included a number of improvements and alterations in vari<ou<i parts of the Borough roads, Tiie reports of the managers of the abattoirs, gas works, librarian and Borough poundkeeper were read and adopted. Cr. Flanagan brought up the question of selling coke from the Municipal Gas Works, and stated that of lat; he bad received complaints from consumers within the Borough that they had been kept waiting a considerable time for orders.

Mr Blackmail, manager of the gas works, stated that lately the supply of coke had been short, and several consumers were kept waiting for a day or two. He pointed out that in sending out coke orders he always considered the local demand first.

Accounts amounting to £lOl7 17? lid were passed for payment.
