The Masterton County Council yesterday adopted a modified scheme for the completion of the northern approach work.' The estimated cost of the scheme is £633. The County Council-is prepared to make this modification only on the condition that tho Borough Council expends no more loan money on the Queen Street end of the approaches. Mr John Savage waited upon tho Master ton County Council yesterday, and complained that the County reserve adjoining his property wa.s covered with gorse and broom, and infested with rabbits. He offered to clear the reserve if the Council would give him reasonable assistance, or a right to occupy the land. The Council decided that it had no objection to 'Mr Savage occupying the land, provided that lie did not obstruct the water course.

At the meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday, a circular letter was read from the Kiwitea County Council asking for support in approaching the Postmaster-General, through the member for the district, to endeavour to have the present charge of sixpence on all bureau connections per medium of private telephone lines on distances not exceeding twenty-five miles from the Government office used by such private lines where such Government office is not a telephone exchange, reduced to threepence. Tho matter was introduced on account of the large number of private lines being erected by settlers in the outlying districts. The Council decided to hold the matter over till next meeting.

The following recommendations by a sub-committee were adopted by the Masterton County Council yesterday: "That two double teams, a garden and a Potham dump waggon, with a three-horse- team, be provided for use in the Ridings of Opaki, Rangitumau, Te Whiti and Wainuiourn that two double teams and a grader be provided for use in the Ridings of Alfredton and Upper Tauerri; that the prime cost, repairs and any idle time, be charged against the Ridings respectively, on a pro rata basis, and each Riding charged for the Avork performed by the teams thereon, at cost price including horses, feed, drivers' waggons, etc." The-recommendations are

A report from Inspector Cairns concerning the unsatisfactory condition of the Lansdowne water-supply was received at the meeting of the Master/ton County Council yesterday. On the motion of the chairman, the matter was referred to the Lansdowne Water Supply Committee, with a suggestion that a public meeting be called. Murray, of Auckland, waited on the Minister of Customs yesterday as a deputation from the boat manufacturers of Auckland. He suggested that the Minister should call a, conference during the recess of the representatives of both classes of manufacturer and retailers. ' The Minister promised to convene a meeting of representatives of the trade tin's -session. The Government was determined that the people would not ho hoodwinked by purchasing brown paper boots.

Cr Forman drew attention to thp fact that those settlers who reserved areas of native'busfo taxed on there re-sei-ves. The clerk wo-nlerH whether, if the section on which the County offices stood were planted in trees, the Council would be exempted from loe<d taxation. It was eventually decided to defer consideration of the matter.

A petition was presented to the Mastcrton Countv Council yesterday from a number of settlers in the Kai-tmi-a district, r.raying the Council to ru-prect a bridge near the Kaituna School, which had recently been washed away by flood. Mr W.- L. Falconer waited upon the Council in .support of the petition. He stated that the cost of the bridge would not be very considerable as there was plenty of metal available, and the stringers were already provided. He also pointed out that the settlers had made the roads in the district, at their own expense. The chairman nointed out that it was not the policy of the Council to spend ratepayers' money on new work .such as bridges. The Council struck rates for maintenance only. It was decided to refer the matter to the engineer for a reno rt as to cost. The chairman (to Mr Falconer): "That's all Ave can do for you in the meantime.-'' Mr Falconer : "I thank you. During the year ending March 31sfthe Maisterton Gas; Works received 2786 tons of coal, of which 2368 tons were carbonised, and 127 tons sold. The amount of gas made for every ton of coal carbonised was 11,581 cubic feet.

During the" year endrng" March 3lst fifty-seven chains of gas extensions were made from the Master-ton GasWorks. During the same period the expenses connected with the plant, manufacturing, and purifying amount-, ed to £667 16s 7d.
