PUBLIC WORKS VOTES.
•The system under which public work? votes have been made in New Zealand during tho last couple of decades has been cumbrous and extravagint. Thousand's, one may almost say millions of pounds have been thrown away on roads, bridges and railways of an almost useless character. .There is not a Comity Council or a Road Board i.n the Dominion mat cannot bear evidence to this fact. It is too late in the present, sew:on of Parliament to expect decent order to evolve from wie chaos that has existed. The Mapiey Government has, in fact, been compelled to accept in globo the esstimatep of its predecessors. - It is eminently desirable that the Minister of Public Works should, at the earliest possible moment, devise a rational scheme under which the public works appropriations shall be made. The prf front system cannot be ~ allowed to continue.
