WEATHER IN MASTERTON
ANOTHER EXCESSIVE DOWNPOUR. RIVERS AND GREEKS OVERFLOW. RESIDENTS HAVE ANXIOUS * V TlMju.
The southerly rain which F?t in at Masterton on Tuesday afteni'oon< continued almost without intermission, until yesterday evening. The atirra-s----pfoere was bitterly cold, and the clean ents generally were' about as boisterous as they could be. Over two inches of rain were registered between 5 p.m. on! Tuesday and 5 .p.m. yesterday. The 'rivers, were in a flooded condition, and the creeks' overflowed their banks in -many directions.
DAMAGE IN TOWN. The Waip'akutu creek, whidi comes down from the Upper Plain and junctions with the iMakora creek, overflowed its banks. The water inundated the property cf Mr x'inPiey in PowuiaH Street to a depth of several feet. Coming across the .street, it rushedthrough the back yards of several residences, land passed over the footpath into Cole Street. The Patter thoroughfare was 1 flooded for some' hours, (residents being .unable to gain access to their homes without wading through water The Overflow from Makota Greek spread over the lower portion cf Cliiapel Street, and the whole of Mr Pragnell's section at the corner of Renall and .Queen .Streets was inundated. The water entered several shops in Queen Street, and passed right across the thoroughfare. Mimy low-lying sections were submerged in Dixon. Street, and a considerable number of residents were affected by the flood waters. Fortunately ,no fierioug damage resulted, and the water had disappeared im the evening. - SLIPS IN THE COUNTRY. j ' Reports to hand irtfk-ate that the I rain was he.rvier in the country than i dn. town. The o, staff of iho Masterton County Council iig doing its best-to l dear the roads for -traffic, "but it is feared', that it will be isome days before the Bcdeford Road will be open.
