BIG LAND SLIDE
IN SOUTH ISLAND. OHRISTGHURCH, Last Night. Passengers by the West Coast train did not arrive in Christchurch till 10.50 this evening, consequent on a considerable landslide, half a mile on the Springfield side of Avoca. It is estimated that more than a 1000 tonß of earth came down, and as a consequence one side of the line was lifted from six to eight feet from the surface. The train from Cass conveyed West' Coast passengers, and was unable to proceed past the obstruction, and ,a relief train was sent out from Darfield, and brought the passengers to town. It .will be .several days, it is an.ticipa-ted. before the obstruction will be cleared, and the line restored. In the meantime arrangements have been made to continue the communication by conveying the passengers to the block, and carrying them fef another train to and from Cass.
