MASTERTON HARRIERS
A TRIAL RACE
Yesterday afternoon the Masterton Harriers had a trial race- to pick their team for the Provincial Championships. A good five-mile course was laid at Lansdowne, and a very keen and exciting race resulted. Drummond, closely followed by Bradbury, made the pace to the half-way turning point. On the homeward journey these two made strenuous efforts to wear eacli other down, but oossibiy owing 'to several bad. fall© Druromcmd was unable to hold the redoubtable "Jack," who finished in the creditable time of 32miu lOsecs. Messenger ran strongly, but finding difficulty near the finish in keeping his feet on the slippery course, was overtaken and beaten by Hood for third place. A sealed handicap was held in connection with the above, and resulted as follows: — G. Hood, 2£min.s. hop., 32mins.. Ist; R, Messenger, 3mins. hep.; 32mins 10 sees., 2nd; J. Bradbury, scr, 32mins. 20secs. 3rd; D. Mcßae, 4*mins. hep., 32mins. 30secs.. 4th; W. Drummond, scr., 33mins., sth; D. Mackersey, 4-J mins., 33mins. 15secs., 6th. The Saturday members will hold a like 'raceon Saturday, after which the team will be picked.
