THE NORTHERN APPROACH
QUESTION OF MODIFICATION.
DISCUSSED BY COUNTY COUNCIL.
At tl«e meeting cf the Mastertorc (County Cbmicil yesterday, a letter wais read from the Borough Council, 'stating that it was prepared to consider the question, of the -modification of the northern (approach work, 'provided that no further claim was traad'e upon the Council. The chairman stated that it wa-s for itlio iCoiUK-i 1 Hb say whether it would 'submit a. modified sc 1 • me, or whether they should carry out the work ac'cording to the Governors warrant. Cr Foreman expressed tho opinion that they ishbuld submit a modified Scheme.
J The. Engineer stated thai he had 1 prepared a modified scheme, which provided for an expenditure of £694 'los. This would provide for the macadamising of the .road to a widlth ,of «40ffc ia parts, and 30ft in other parte, together with the ker.bing and sanding Of the footpaths. No provision was made for the-work' on the Bor- : tough side of the approaches. i Cr Toogood moved that the modiifieict flroposali as 'suggested (by the Etaginieeir be submitted .to..the Bortfuglt Council through the County .solicitor, .provided tliat the Borough Council supplies its machinery. Cr Toogood tfooughffc it wsis in. the interests •of both bcd'ks that there should he a (modification), and that the work should be completed. Cr Cameron sceonded the resolution.
After somei discussion the Chairman suggested that a sum, of £2O be added for rolling .the road, and £BS for contingencies, making £BOO in all for the completion of the work.
The Clerk poemfod out that the Borough Council had .been previously, -informed that the .cost of a modified.' jschemo woatfd be about £6OO, and (that to complete the work 'according to the .Govcnnor's warrant would be about £BOO.
The Engineer stated that the cost •of material had increased 'si/rice he had framed hr> original estimate. He now •estimated .the cost of completing the work 'in terms of the Governor's warrant at £1422 Bs. . !
'Cr Murray said thiat the price of •labour and materials had increased since the' Council's first estimate was prepared two years wigo. Cr Tcbgcod expressed the opinion flhat the Council should set up a Committee to go into the whole question. Tho Council did not appear to know where it wa.s. He moved that ia ccmimittee cMcwtiirg of the Chairman, and Clrs Clamerou and Millea- be set up to investigate tho matter and •report to next meeting, so that 'a definite reply may be sent to the Borough Council.
