MORE COMPULSION.
The. experiment which is being niado in Wianganui,, of compelling hoys between the age® of fourteen and kseventeen years ito attend continuation, classes, .will, be watched with considerable interest thiroughomt t'h© Dominion. Under a recent amendment of the Education Act, .Boards cf EdueaItioin. are'. enipoHvered to enforce compulsory attendance at such <?lai»rs. It is questionable, however, whether the exercising c'f this power may not p'ravdke unnecessary hra'stility, and impose a hardship upon young men who have already to sacrifice a. great deal of their leisure- ti/me to defence. Tha system of compulsion, even- wthen applied to such a. desirable thing ao education, may be .carried to extremes.. It is ain old but trite saying' that "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."
