THE COST OF LIVING.
ITo The Editor.!
Sir,— To me it seems ailtcgebher a wanto of itimie to Appoint a Commission to enquire into the.ccst of living. ,It must 'be patent to everyone that ■shcii'tening the hours- of -work and. lengthening the ihours of idlerAiss mean an increased expenditure in • frivoliI'ties. Wages have risen, and the peo- | ple v have a greater spending power in coin sequence. Those who .were ahle io .save on low wages, are still better, laible to save now than) formerly, and the worker who is careful is better off n«w than formerly. If people get mcii'e money the majority are 'g'OTng to ,speiiid it, wot save it up far a <rainy day. There is .nothing to 'be gained •in providing for oid age ariS" sickness —the Government are attending to: that'. The present .teachings are to get as imucli wages as passible, do as little work as possible, spend all that is received, aind leave 'tho .future to the Government, .When a- man gets good wages and does good work, he will bo' more likely to .save Ins 'oaa'nrings, as 'he feels .tihey are justly hie, «nd he will not lbo intelmed to waste that fol" w'hicGi 'he "hats given good value. Luxuries have increased in price 'to meet the increased demand, but loommon, mecessaries are. not higher in iprice snow Ithani ttlne-y were twenty years ago.— I "am, etc., VAijUE FOR VALUE.
