CARPET-BAGGERS.
MiiKsta's of the Grown are pursuing the occupation of carpet-baggers just n'ow. Without anty apparent motive they are flying about "the country at lightnfrig .speed. In 1 north and south, east and.west they are travelling, and feasting, and talking, and promising. But lis there no special motive in all this business? Why, for instance, ha,s the Prime •Minister been airing hie rhetoric at Dargaville? Is it that Mr Coates, the member for that electorate, is a doubtful Ministerial quantity when the divisio'm bell rings ? Why do Mr Mackenzie, amd Mr Laurensort, and Mr Russell follow each other in quick succession at Duaiedin? Is it that Mesers Millav, Clark and SkJey are deserting the Ministerial camp? It can hardly he said that Ministers are endeavouring to acquaint' themselves with the require-,-meats of' the country. The time for this is not on. the eve of a session, when Cabinet, raider n'cimal circumstances, 'Would be preparing the legislation "ffca be submitted to """Parliamon't.
