DEARTH OF SCHOOL TEACHERS.
■CbTistclhureh school teachers, interviewed regarding .rea.soms for the difficulty in. inducing young men and women to enter the teaching profession, stated that boys especially show a disinclination to en!bar .a profession demanding so long and laborious an apprenticeship involving dependence on parents-till, the age of 21. Working men cannot afford to allow their sons to remain so long without wages, and ■men in, hatter positions prefer to place 'their hoys in more lucrative walks of life. Some boys become pupil teachers merely to eairn a few shillings, and am occupation! which gives ample leisure for study for law or
"medicine, and) resign, as goon, -as they axe ir.eques.ted to go to the training 'college. Alt present pupil teachers receive £45 the first year after matriculation., £55 the second year,, -and '2n the third and (fourth yews spent at the training oolllege an al'lowaarce of £3O per aaiimian. They have to , 'sign am -agreement to spend five out I -of eight years after fe-vi-ng the college in' active teaching. In addition 'they must pay all university lecture iFees amid pay for tuition in drawing -and singing, subjects ctompiilsory for sa certificate. On kavrng -the college Iwi'th <a O oeirtifioaite, the teacher may receive less than £l2O per annaiim, ■and (tiliie minlaEium as rapidly becoming the maximum.
