The many friends of Mr and Mrs V. Donald will' regret to learn of the death of their only son, Gordon Vivian, on Monday night f rom meningitis. Mr Donald was rJisent in. Auckland at the of Ithe ,snd occurrence, and was expected back yesterday.

The Marti'niborough Star says:—The friends of ;Mr Alex. Ross will regret to learn that he present suffering from a severe attack of pneumonia and pleurisy, and is in rather a critical condition. He is being attended by Dr. Johnston at the house of liis brother, Mr J. M. Ross.

At a large Masonic gathering at Cartertcr last evening, R.W. Bro. -5. Moncrieff, ex-Superintendent, was pre. rented by the Masonic lodges of the district with a handsome silver tea'service, in recognition of the valuable service he has rendered to Masonry in'the district.

At the conclusion of the an-niversarv service in. the Mastcrton Methodist 'Church oh Monday evening, Mr S. H. Ralph, for many: years choirmaster was presented with a well-bound IryminbcNjk. The presentation was made by the Rev. S. J. Sevpell, and was suitably acknowledged' by Mr Halph.

Miss Ramsay, .organising agent of the Presbyterian Women's Mission Union, was received -and welcomed at 'the meeting of the Wairarnpa Presbytery yesterday, and was , assured of cordial co-operatio.n in.her: work. Miss Ramsay briefly replied and expressed flier desire to deepen the interest among the ladies of the church in .■home and foreign mission, work. Mr C. N. 'Haslam, first Assistant teadher at the Mastertom District High School, has been appointed to lie headmaster of the Island Bay near M,r Haslam was one of the four country teachers selected by the Education Board from a list of forty-two 'applicants for the position. Ho has been for some years "in the Masterton school, and has done excellent work as a teacher. He has also taken ;n teen interest 'in- militarv matters, and has filled the position of Lieutenant to the local Volunteer and "Territorial corps. In school sports he •has also taken an active interest. . His loss to the Masterton school will be very severely felt, but his .numerous "'friends will be pleased to lenow that ' his new appointment .means a welldeserved promotion.
