At yesterday's meeting of the Masterton County Council, Mr W. Davidsoil, of Masterton, was -appointed County ranger.

Mr Whiteley, sharebroker to the Mangaone Oilfields Company, Limited, will be in Masterton to-day and tomorrow-, this being his final visit. The shares are being taken up freely in the Wairarapa and Hawke'sßay districts. '

The picture is 3000 feet long, and Messis Thompson and Payne have secured the sole and exclusive rights of this magnificent Parisian production.

A deputation from the Society of Architects of New Zealand waited on the Hon. G. W. Russell on Monday, says a Wellington telegram, and complained that such work as hospital and other buildings was not let on the competitive system. Mr Russell replied that the Government nad nothing to do in the matter beyond supervision work, and the exercise of control, inasmuch as the State provided half the cost of sudi works. After a. long interview, the Mimstei said that he was willing to issue a circular to "Hospital Boards suggesting to them that where nejv buildings had to be erected, they might see their way to call for competitive designs. Laurenson, Minister ot Labour, stated in the course of an address at Dunedin,.that since tho loss of the Titanic the "Union Company's boats had been supplied with extra boats and rafts, so that now every ship under the 'Company's flag was able to carry in. boats or in rafts the maximum number of passengers which ohe vessel could carry. The Minister paid a high tribute to the manner in which the Union Company generally conducted its business.

The classes at the Masterton Technical School have made a good beginning for the second term, there being present on evening 33 pupils at 'the English and Arithmetic class, whilst on Tuesday evening 31 pupils attended for instruction in bookkeping, five for dressmaking, and six for plumbing. The classes in art ■needlework, under Mrs Howell, which commence this morning and will l>e continued on Friday evening next, also give promise of being well supported. The new schooltoouse at Kaiwaiwai, near Featherston, vras officially opened yesterday. There was tendance of settlers of the district. The Wellington Education .Board was I represented,by Musi's W. Buchanan, M.P., A:. W. Hogg, arid A. Eli Vile, each of whom made a Mr G. L. Stewart (Secretary of the Education Board), amd Mr Spencer (editor of the School Journal) were also present. Williams, one of the founders of the original school, was among thoso present. An inquiry into the circumstances under which the old school at Greytown was destroyed by fire was .held yesterday afternoon by Messrs W. C. '"Buchanan, M.P., A. W. Hogg and A. H. Vile, members of the Wellington Education Board. The Education Department was represented by Mr Spencer. Evidence was given by Messi's W. C. Ravies, E. Rockery, Kidston, C. J. Beard, Miss Talbot, and the boy cleaner. This went'to show that one of the chimneys was defect tive, and that the fire was first discovered in the neighbourhood of this. The .members of the Board, after going exhaustively into the case, decided to report that the indications wore that the fire had originated through a defective chimney. It was also decided to recommend that in the construction of future school buildings tho chimneys should be plastered.

On the motion of Cr. Murray at the monthly meeting of the Ma-stertoir County Council held yesterday afternoon, it was decided that the County Clerk write to the Hawke's Bay and: "VVairoa County Councils and apply for information in reference to metal wagons which are being used by the Counties. Mr Murray explained that the wagons in question were most suitable for the purpose of carting metal,, and did very little damage to the roads. ,
