BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDILARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough, Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening, there being, H.is Worship •the Mayor (Mr J. M. Goradine), and Crs. H. J. o'Lea,ry, J. Elliott, F. WTemple,, W. .Pragnell, J. 0. Hwington, J. I*. Prentice, A;. Donald and E. Flanagan.

In reference to the (remits to come ibelbre the Municipal Association Coniference, ur, Temple moved that the following remit be forwarded to the (Ctoniarenee: "That the Mayor of the •Borough be elected by and from the Councillors." •

Cr Ewingtbn seconded' the motion. Or O'Lear'y did not favour the motion, as lie considered that the election of Mayor* should not be confined to the Council., as iib was possible that in- this may suitable men might be prevented from offering their .services.

On the voices, Cr .Temple's (motion <wsas oaiiried, and it was decided to forward the remit to the Conference. Cr Donald moved, and Or Prentice seconded, that the acreage of land for private schools he reduced from 4 acres to 2 acres, as in hii« opinion the .former acreage was tco huge from a rating point of view, ana he thought that this remit should he forwarded to the Municipal Conference.— Carried.

A letter tvae read from the Borough solicitor in .reference to an agreement being made with the Vv'airarapa '.Caledonian Society in connection with the fencing of the Park Oval, and granting the Caledonia.!* Society six

years' rights of the Park for New Year' 9 Day sports, and stating that the Council would be within its legal rights in making an agreement to that effect.

A commai nica.fion was received' from 'the Mastertion "Clranty Council in reference to the dedication of a piece of '•land at the Sohvay railway station, ■which is required for the purpose of providing a better entrance to .the \station.— It was decided that the •Borough Council aerept dedication of the land in question, provided tine County Council do all the necessary I work, and pay expenses entailed.
