THURSDAY'S MATCHES. T The Wairarapa hockey championship gi fixtures readied a further stage yes- p . terday, when a series of matches were , J( played in various parts of the Mai- f{ raukpa. A great deal df interest was tl oentrecl in the games at Lunsdowne, & Mid a large crowd of spectators, inchiding a predominant 'number of lad- l]y ies, were present to witness the 0 frames. The chief attraction was the y/ senior match, P. and T. versus St. p Matthew's, when .the former team re- v reived tlieir first defeat by 2 goals f| to nil, after a keenly fought contest. . Q P and T. were unfortunate m losing f the'.services of J. .Diggins, '"'ho re- l I <oived a severe blow on the nose, neo- ;{ Witating life ™™>™ l from the | ground. Nichoiscn replied the injured player, bv,t the P. and T. cannot be said to have gained by the interchange. The match between the Masterton ladies and Kia Toa was also full of interest, the champion Greytown team winning by the narrow , margin of one goal to nil. The Masterton team- only require n.(or,e practice together to become a vary formidable combination. Dalefield juniors Tpitovedi themselves much too good for Excelsior junions, and won by 4 goals to 1. Tito following are the results : SENIOR. ST. MATTHEW'S (2) v P. AND T. 0 ■Prom the. bully »ff it wan evident tWit .St.. Matthew's were, out for .» : seldom haie Itey flayed,a ' 'betterlgameyvahd although, P. aind,P., • ,soitte : good.passing..i;ivS'h'es, ; ' they did hot ■seam to have their usual I flash.' In.the. first spell honours were fairly easy, although P. 'and T. hixJ I to repel several very hot attacks from the St. Matthew's forwards, of whom Douglas was the outstanding pkyer, It was not until well into the spei! that Douglas drew first blood for St. < Matthew's by a cleverly placed goal. From this to the end of the spell, play was confined to half utay, and half-time-sounded -with St. Ma'tthew's * goal, P. and T. nil. The second lfolf , was a repetition, of the first, both sides striving hard to gain a Ipoint. ' The fback (play of Hanley saved P. "and T.;time and again, and the 'latter's . forwards .missed ;at 'least one good opportunity of ibut it 'was not Itoihe. 'From a passing rush .by the •Si; Maltfliew's forwards, ""Morris, from. an awkward angle, scored a goal, Which must he considered to -have an * element of luck aSb'out it, from the fact that a. goal from the same angle would not he plaaed once in « dozen times: However, there it was, and A placed the issue of the game beyond doubt. From this to the end, St. Matthew's easily held their own, and P.'land- T. suffered their first defeat by 2 goals to mil. Messrs O'Meara and Fisher refereed. EXCELSIOR' (7 v. FEATHERSTON (0). At Foatherston yesterday, after a good game, Excelsior seniors scored a deuiaivo 'victory ove>r Feathorston by 7 goals. The winners were in splendid' form, their combination being excellent. In the- first ispril Excelsior ihad .things, practically all tlieir own way, and it'<v\ias very .rarely that the the -Blue' and Blacks got within their 'opponents' circle, In the seceond venture the -Featherston forwards retaliated, and on'several.occasions Gent in some hot shots, 'ibut Kiesenberg, the (Excelsior gor -beeper, played a very safe game, .stopping varything. The .score is <» very fair indication tetf the relative strength of both teams. Goals were scored ,by W. Williams (3), G. ■Barr (2), and A. Bragneli (2). JUNIOR. , DALEFIELD (4) v.. EXCELSIOR (1.) This match calls for little description, ais the game was won in » hollow • fashion by Dalefield, who showed good combination, and were in much bte-tter .. condition! than the home team. From the comimenoement of the match the play was mostly centred around the 'Excelsior goal line, and with the exception of apasmodio rushes by the Litter's forwards, the game was all in (flavour of the visitors, who scored four j ! goals, one each by Ferrick, Foster, j Baumiber and Sage. A. Vile scored ■the only goal for" Excelsiors. Mr 'Hlornblow .was referee. MARTTNBOROUGH (5) v. ST. MATTHEW'S (1). 81. -Matthew's were defeated at Greytown. yesterday hy Martinborough after a very hard tussle, by five goals to one. The Martinborough team, ow present form, should have no difficulty in annexing the Junior Championship. LADIES' ASSOCIATION. KIA TOA (1) v. MASTERTON (0). ' This match was somewhat in the nature of a surprise, :as many expect-
Ed that the unbeaten Greytown team would have a rather easy win over the recently formed Maisterton Olub. The game was in many ways a revelation, and the play of the Ma-sterton ' girls showed that with a little more I practice and combination they will ' become a very strong team. The. visi- I tors .played tlieir usual safe game, but ] they had very little the better of the I game. Masterton on (several occasions lost good opportunities of scoring by Ibeing over-lainxious, while the defiance of Greytown was always very sound. 'Z. Humphries, who is one cif the fineat exponents of iho game in the Waira-rapa, was the outstanding player for Kia Toa, and scored the only goal of the game. B ; . Orr also played well for the winners, while .for Masterton A. O'Leary, J. Miller, N. O'Dowd and iB. 'Scott were .always prominent. Mr W. CYv.stal was referee.
