Ihe Prime Minister, and all other Ministers who are absent from Wellington, sent apologies and good withes. Mr ,H. C. Tewsley (chairman of the Committee which organised the gathering) presented Sir Joseph witm. an illummated address, expressing appreciation [of iho late .Prim*.Minister'* public .jservicas- rtud..of i his:.meritfr.as,,a-, zen. Lady Wiard was presented with a "Bijou" grand- p:auo. After Mr tt Tewsloy had epokeh, -Sir J. Carroll and Mr Hanan spoke in high terms of praise regarding the character of their .late political ohiK'f. Sir Joseph Ward , had « magnificent reception. He said | he would not at the present stage deal with the political .situation in New •Zealand. He would,-(however, take an etorly opportunity of setting his views arid his plans for the future before the public. Referring to the last ekct£olls, ho said that at that time he waft negotiating for loans amounting to ,four million pounds. When he eaw the results of the first ballots he hung off the money .market, and after tin; second ballots he decided not to go on with the loans. Had these transactions -.been carried out, the present tightness in the local money market •would not have been experienced.
