AUSTRALIA V. SOUTH AFRICA. AUSTRALIANS VICTORIOUS. BY AN INNINGS AND 88 RUNS. FAULK XER UXSUPPOBTED. (Received May 29, 8.5 a.m.) LONDON, May 28. The Triangular Test match, Australia v. South Africa, was continued to- ! day. Emery and Whitty opened tho at- ' tack. The South Africans did not start well, four wickets falling for 54. - Hartigan and Nourse, the not-out men of the previous day, faced the bowling. Nourse in playing back to the fifth ball in Whitty's first over was howled. He made 17. —Two for 30. Snooke was the incomer. He shaped uncomfortably, .and played Whitty on when he had scored seven. Hartigan was then 18.—3 for 42. So far, Emery's bowling was erratic. A cross breeze was blowing, and I Whitty was swerving. Faulkner filled the vacancy. The batsmen played anxiously for five overs, only two singles -being scored. Fifty-two runs were scored in 60 minutes. Shortly after Hartigan's end came. While attempting to cut a s'horfc pitched ball from Emery ho was taken at the wickets by Carkeek. He had"made- 25 in seventy minutes. —Four for 54. At this stage Faulkner had put together three, having made a single in half an hour. Before he 'had scored he nearly played Whitty on. The wind wan helping t'he bowlers. White filled the vacancy, and Kelleway relieved Whitty. Faulkner cut him for four in the first over. Hazlitt replaced Emery at 77. When he had made 15 Faulkner cocked a ball from Kelleway up in the slips, but it was out of reach of the fielders. The bowling and fielding were clever. White was obviously 'handicapped, having to bat with an injured hand. He late-cut four off Kelleway, and hoisted the century in 125 minutes. At 101, Matthews went on in place of Kelleway. In his first over, Faulkner; wiho had made 36, gave the easiest of 'chances to' Whitty at: mid-on, who; howeyer, missed, .the ball. . Mwinett replaced Hazlitt at 112, arid in the second over.Faulkner reached 50 by a VsquaxevCut,for He'had..made 51 in 105 mirrutes. At 132 Emery went on again in placo of Matthews. At the luncheon adjournment the score stood 4 for 136, Faulkner being 01 and White 18. Whitty and Emery took up the bowling, and this partnership was soon dissolved, Whitty getting White lbw in the second over. The retiring batsman had made 22 in 100 minutes. ; Faulkner was now 63 —Five for 113. Mitchell' filled the vacancy, and when:. eight gave a hard chance to Hazlitt at sihort-leg off Whitty. The latter, however, soon had his revenge, for when, 11, Mitchell played forward to Whitty and was clean bowled,— Six for 167. Schwarz then went in. Hazlitt replaced Emery at 192. The change was successful, for Schwarz, when 19, lashed out at a ball from Hazlitt and missed it, being bowled. Faulkner was now 89. Seven wickets were now , down for 200, which had occupied 235 . minutes in making - - Beaumont was tho next. man in. Faulkner, with a single off Whitty, reached his emtury after 220 minutes' play. He had batted cautiously as he neared the century, and he received an ovation on reaching it. When Beaumont had reached 31 lie was clean bowled by Matthews. The out going batsman 'had taken 60 minutes to make his runs, which included some good drives —8 for 265. Disaster now overtook the South Africans, Matthews performing the hat trick. Pegler, the incomer, went out leg before wicket from the first ball, while Ward, the last roan, went out in exactly tho same way. Faulkner carried his bat for 122. Scores: —
