[To The Editor.: Sir,— I would like to be allowed, through the .medium of your columns, to let the 'many firiends of the late Mr H. S. Wairdell; know that the Council of the Nitfw Zealand Academy of I ( line Arts has decided, in response to numerous requests, to ask the public Wo subscribe to the purchase df a H. S. 'Wardell me'-mor.al pxt'iiire foi' presfclrutatioiflb the National Gallery. It is felt that th:-a will- he a fitting (tribute to pay to the memory cf one who fall his life was an enthusiastic worker in the cause of art in thiss «prov-lin-ce, and who, up to wlithin less than a, week cfih.iis.cleath, was actively helplinig to bring the National. iGallery movement to successful fruition. The Council, in .coming to this decision, (resolved to suggest the beautiful painting by Frank Dicks.ee, R.A., entitled "The Mother," now on exhibition in Wellington, as the picture to be so purchased. It is felt -that the iwide 'circle ,of firiends of the late Mr Wardel'l in t'iis .Wairarnpa district will be glad to avail themselves of the opportunity to pay this tribute to his 'mle'inoir'y. Contributions for this purpose may ibe sent to the undersigned at 75, Grant ißoad, Wellington, or to Mr 'Summerell, care of Levin and Co., JMasterton, and will he duly acknowledged.— I |am, etc., J.
