Sir James ■Carroll was presented at Gisborne last night with a, handsome ) illuminated address, and other very Taluablo tokens. A Feilding telegram states that Mr H; K. Bradbury, clerk to,the Halcomlie Town Board, was found dead on Tuesday evening in a paddock. He - had a, gunshot wound in the abdomen. He was last seen alive in the morning, when liie was in possession of a double-barrelled gun. He. had been worried lately, and it is supposed that he lost his reason. Deceased had fought through the Maori War, and -k&s in receipt of a military pension. He leaves a wife and two grown-up ■children. Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., is at present • ■on a visit to the Forty-Mile Bush. | 4. letter has been received in Auck- | land from Melbourne to the effect I that the condition of Mr W. H. Jndkins, editor -of tfao Review of Reviews, , and formerly, of Masterton, is now in « critical condition, and an operation is spoken of to case the pain from which he has been a sufferer for a : lon** time. The doctors doubt that the | operation can be safely performed. j ■ Major Colvin, editor of the New "Zealand "War Cry," visits Masterton to-morrow. Mr H. F! Green has been appointed to succeed Mr H. S. Ckughton as a member of the Committee of the Masterton Competitions Society. Mrs 'Ball was sent for, and is also staying at tho Marquis. Mr Baft passed a fair •' night, but early yesterday morning he had "a bad 'attack of hemorrhage. His condition is slowly improving, and it is anticipated he will be able to go to his homo in Palmerston North on Friday next. Mr Charles Scabrook, one of the oldest residents of Greymouth, died yesterday morning, after o long illness. A Press Association message from Auckland states that tho Hon. J. A. Millar has been suffering from pto- j maino poisoning for tho last few days. and has been forced to delay his departure to Gisborne. Tn all probability Mr Millar will leave for the South on Friday. ' News was received at Martinb.irfltigh on Saturday last that Mr T j Hale, lata postmaster of that township,died at Auckland ok Friday ?ve ■- ing. Mr Halo had bfsen in poor health .for some time, and as a consequent was forced to resign his position in Maryborough. \t the recent annual communication of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand Freemasons, R. W. Bro. J. Moncneff, of St. Mark's Lodge, Carterton,- who had for two years been Provincial Grand Master of Kie W&llington district, was presented, on behalf of the brethren of the lodges in the district, ' with the regalia of the Past Provincial Grand Master. It consists of a colar of gold links, and handsome apron. On the pendant of the collar is engraved an inscription recording the presentation. The thoroughness with which their Provincial Grand Master had carried out his duties was further acknowledged by the lodges in a somewhat unusual way, for, on the same occasion as above .mentioned, a gold watch and chain was handed to. R.W. Bro. Moncrieff to present to his wife, who had so often been deprived of his company during his , freqtfßnt. „ -absence from home on Masonic business. The watch is suitably inscribed m being presented by the Freemasons to Mrs Moncrieff.
