THE-LICENSING ACT
At the.Magistrate's Court in Carterton yesterday, before Mir L. G. Reid, S.M., William Redmond was. charged under sections 146 and 147 of the Licensing Act, 1908, with selling liquor intended for consumption in a no-license area, to ; writ, Masteriton, and without labelling the contents and notifying the Clerk of the Ooull at Masterton. Mr Lavery appeared for defendant, and the police conducted tho prosecution. The case was one arising out of a man named Johnson procuring two bottles of whisky, and having the cork drawn from one bottle for the purpose of consumption on the wa.v to his destination. ''The police brought the action to show that it was nontrary to law for a person to buymore than the required quantity of spirits intended to be taken to a nolicense area without signing for the same. Persons were under the impression that if they bought two-bottles of whisky and drew the cork of one ttoey would' be .getting the better of the a ßis Worship upheld the police contention, and said that the fact of .a person buying more than the quantity of liquor prescribed by law, and broaching one bottle before reaching bis destination in a no-license area, did not do away with the fact that, the quantity allowed had been taken from the hotel. ' . • Evidence for and against theproseeution was heard, and His Workup convicted-and discharged defendant.
