UNIVERSITY BURSARIES

A NEW PROPOSAL. Speaking at the opening of the Assembly Hall at the Masterton District High School yesterday, the Hon. J. A. Han an said that tho now Ministry has decided to extend tho principle of free University education by opening the door to University bursaries somewhat more widely. Hitherto, said Mr Hauau, such bursaries .have been tenable only by those who have gained "credit" in tho University Junior Scholarship examination, even although they have nob obtained scholarships; in general, tho bursaries amount to tho payment of all College and University less for those who hold them. In the same way as Junior Free places at Secondary Schools, District High Schools, and Technical Schools are open to all who have satisfactorily completed their course at Primary Schools, and Senior Free Places to all who have made good, progress while holding Junior Free Places, so now University Imsaries (carrying'free University Education) will he open to all who have completed satisfactorily a four years' secondary course. Jn addition, pupil teachers and probationers ttho now are eligible for admission to a. Training. College, may elect to take a bursary before entering a Training College, and so may be enabled to tako a degree, and afterwards spend a year at Training College to complete their professional training.
